Home Remedies for Dry Skin

If you find that your skin feels dry and tight during the cold winter months, you’re not alone. For many people, staying hydrated and keeping skin moisturised becomes even more important during the colder months when indoor heating dries out our skin cells. If you’re after some quick and easy ways to tackle dry skin, here are a few home remedies that require just a few simple ingredients.

Dry skin care routines you can try at home

While it can be tempting to load up on store-bought moisturisers in winter, if you suffer from dry skin, it’s important to look into natural remedies to treat dry skin too. Lotions sold in stores are often loaded with chemicals designed to make your skin soft, but they also contain other ingredients such as fragrance that can irritate sensitive skin and cause breakouts or other problems if you’re prone to acne.

Although they may take some time, most natural remedies for dryness can be just as effective. To relieve dry skin on your face naturally, try one of these remedies.

1) Hydrating Avocado-Honey Face Mask

This homemade face mask requires just a few ingredients from your store cupboard, but will leave your face feeling super hydrated and clean. The avocado is full of natural oils and the honey and vinegar have anti-inflammatory benefits perfect for acne-prone skin.

All you need to do is combine half an avocado, one tablespoon of raw honey and half a teaspoon of cider vinegar. Combine until smooth and apply to clean and dry skin until it’s dry (10-15 minutes). Then rinse off with water and pat your skin dry with a towel.

2) Homemade Brown Sugar Scrub

During the winter months, the skin on our bodies can become dry and scaly. Exfoliating is sometimes the only way to remove dead skin, but the good news is that you can make your own with just a few natural ingredients.

In a small jar *combine 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of honey, 3 tablespoons of avocado oil (olive oil works well too), and a couple of drops of vanilla essential oil (optional). Combine well and smooth onto the body, rubbing gently to buff away any dry skin. Leave on for 5 minutes and wash off to reveal smooth, glowy skin.

*This makes enough for one use, double or triple the ingredients to make enough for multiple uses. Keep in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks.

3) Anti-Redness Turmeric, Honey & Yoghurt Face Mask

This natural mask is perfect for those who suffer from redness and irritation in the winter. Turmeric and honey are anti-inflammatory and the yoghurt adds an extra hydration boost.

Combine one tablespoon of yoghurt, one teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of turmeric. Combine well and apply to clean, dry skin before letting it dry fully (10-15 mins). Rinse off with warm water and pat the skin dry with a towel. Apply moisturiser if the skin feels tight.

Skincare tips for the winter months

1) Use Hyaluronic Acid daily. It can help retain moisture to the skin and can reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles, creating a plumping effect. Apply to damp skin before layering on your daily moisturiser.

2) Keep wearing sunscreen. It’s tempting to skip sunscreen in winter because you’re less likely to spend time outside when it’s cold, but UV rays can cause damage even when they don’t feel like they are doing anything. Look for an SPF 30+ broad-spectrum face moisturiser or lotion that blocks UVA and UVB radiation to keep your skin protected.

3) Cut back on alcohol. While a drink or two can be relaxing at times, drinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of dehydration and a range of other problems such as breakouts.
